One of the most rewarding things you can do in your life is volunteer. Not only is volunteering spiritually and emotionally rewarding, but it is also a fantastic way to get involved with your community and build your passions. To find volunteer opportunities, it is as easy as emailing or visiting an organization's website or physical location and asking if they need volunteers. Some require you to go through training, but most are more than happy to take any individual. It is important to remember that your passions should outweigh your desire to complete a "checklist" for medical school. Your passions are what make you unique and human, and although it is important to build repertoire and experience, it is more important to flesh out your personality, leadership skills, and other critical traits that make you, you. Once you get a volunteer position, stick with it if you enjoy it, and make sure to track how many hours you spend volunteering. Numbers can make a difference to an employer or recruiter!

Having a background in research is not only a great experience, but can also be a requirement for some medical schools. To find research opportunities, look through your university, online, and with independent organizations. Wet labs are the most common thing one thinks of when thinking research, but don't forget dry labs and other forms of research. To apply, treat it as you would a job. If you are asking a professor to join their research lab, make sure you build some form of relationship with that professor. Learn about their research, talk to them about it, and once you have established a solid foundation, ask to apply to their lab.
