After connecting with so many of my peers about imposter syndrome and self-doubt, I realized the pre-med culture at UCLA needed to change. The transition to a fast-paced college curriculum is difficult enough, but pre-health academic counseling is understaffed and often unable to provide support for students that need to be heard. Factoring in the pandemic made me hyper-aware of the impacts that isolation can have on students’ mental health and feelings of belongingness. Joining the Pre-Med Community at UCLA was an opportunity to vocalize these concerns and advocate for collective change. Being a board member since the organization started has been such a rewarding experience! Providing free resources and opportunities to students regardless of their academic standing, identity, or socioeconomic status is something all organizations should strive to accomplish so our medical field truly represents the people it serves.
